The Honeycomb Engine¶
The smell of burnt hair clung to the air, sweet and acrid, mixing with the sharp tang of solder. Hands moved in the dim light of a workshop cluttered with typewriter parts, vacuum tubes, and jars of something gelatinous that quivered when the floorboards groaned.
A girl in a frayed denim apron adjusted a wire strung between a rotary telephone and a petri dish. Her fingers were stained with ink and iodine. The dish pulsed—no, breathed—a rhythm too slow for any machine.
“They’ll never believe you,” said the man at the workbench, tightening a bolt on a malfunctioning oscilloscope. His voice was a rasp, like paper shredding.
The girl didn’t look up. “It stores stories,” she said. “In the sugar.”
A boy in the corner, no older than twelve, hunched over a reel-to-reel tape recorder, splicing a strip of film. “My uncle says computers are just for numbers,” he muttered. “Or maybe for bombing people.”
The girl’s petri dish clouded. A tendril of mossy green crept along the wire, merging with the telephone’s coiled cord. The receiver sprouted lichen.
“See?” she said. “It’s learning the shape of voices.”
The man snorted. “Looks like mold to me.”
At night, the workshop hummed—not a sound, but a pressure. The girl pressed her ear to the petri dish. Static-free silence, then a giggle, high and tinny, like a child’s voice played backward. The reel-to-reel clicked on by itself, spitting out a ribbon of numbers. The boy collected them, writing in a notebook labeled * Ghost Math*.
“They’re not just numbers,” he said. “They’re addresses.”
The man didn’t hear. He’d stopped coming after the telephone grew roots.
Rain seeped through the roof, dampening the oscilloscope’s spark. The girl cradled her dish, now the size of a dinner plate, its surface etched with hexagons. “It wants a body,” she whispered.
The boy nodded. His notebook was full of drawings: circuits blooming into veins, machines with hearts made of gelatin.
When the authorities arrived, they found only the man, now speechless, curled in a corner surrounded by typewriter keys that spelled nothing. The workshop was empty—no girl, no boy, no dish. Just a single rotary phone off the hook, its cord coiled like a sleeping snake.
The line was busy, playing a recorded voice that hadn’t been recorded, in a language that wasn’t language.
The man tried to explain. They called it dementia.
In the end, only the reel-to-reel survived, buried under a floorboard. When played, it didn’t hiss or scratch. It sang—a choir of dial tones and dial-up whispers, all of them chanting the same word:
